About Us

Haverhill & District Local History Group {H&DLHG} exists to collect, house, preserve and interpret the history of Haverhill and its surrounding district. about us pageThe Group also provides a means for the general public to access this local archive material in the Haverhill History Centre.

The Local History Group was born back in 1974 when a group  of people decided some research was a good idea.  People were heard to say, “That own’t last long, 'Averill ain’t got no history!”

Quite obviously that was wrong as we are still here and still researching various items of our history.

Over the years methods have changed and thanks to the Association for SuffolkMuseums the Group has been guided to the extent that it is now an accredited Museum.MAS GRAY

The work of the H&DLHG is entirely dependent on the contribution of volunteers and the Group is always looking for new members to help with the running of this important local service.

Volunteering is a great way to get involved in your local community, gain new skills and experience and meet new people. It could be a great opportunity for students with an interest in history or the running of a small charity.

The Local History Group meet on the third Wednesday of each month from September to May, usually for a talk on a subject of Local History interest. Membership costs £14 per year or £25 for couples.
Membership also includes two copies of the group's magazine - The 'Haverhill Historian'.
